Bayer Leverkusen finish the 2023/24 Bundesliga season undefeated

Bayer Leverkusen ended the 2023/24 Bundesliga season with an unbeaten record after beating Augsburg 2-1 on the final day of the campaign.

Xabi Alonso’s league champions finished 17 points clear of second-placed Stuttgart, ahead of Bayern Munich on a surprise final day when Thomas Tuchel’s side fell 4-2 at Hoffenheim.

Leverkusen, often derided for their lackluster history, have won 28 and drawn six of their 34 games, scoring 89 goals and conceding just 24.

The fun isn’t over for Leverkusen, who are chasing an unbeaten treble that could include DFB Pokal and Europa League glory.

Alonso’s outfit face Atalanta in the European final on May 22, before returning to action in the cup final against Kaiserslautern – two games Leverkusen will go into as heavy favorites to emerge victorious.

After seeing Alonso commit to staying at the club this summer, Leverkusen’s focus will soon shift to retaining their top players, many of whom are admired across Europe.

Attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz is highly sought after by Manchester City and Real Madrid, while right back Jeremie Frimpong has also attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United.

Frimpong’s contract includes a €40 million release clause that only applies this summer. Reports suggest that this can only be started before the European Championships start next month.

Defensively, Jonathan Tah is entering the final 12 months of his contract and will be sold if an extension is not agreed, while a decision will have to be made on Bayern Munich loanee Josip Stanisic.
