White has signed a three-year contract to replace David Saker, who left in May after a disappointing seventh-placed finish in his third season in charge.
White, 40, takes up his first head coaching job but has worked under Sydney Sixers boss Greg Shipperd for the past two years and was an assistant at the Adelaide Strikers.
“I have many good memories here as a player and winning a success, so to return to Renegades in a few years later I enjoy me,” said White. “The idea of working with this group is – the happiest players there, new and experienced players – really enjoying me.
As a player, White represented Australia 142 times across all three formats. He was best known for his contributions as a center batsman on white ball sides.
Although his test work was limited in four games on the 2008 tour of India, White managed a T20i team six times and the ODI group and, in 2011.
He was also a member of the Australian team that defeated New Zealand in the final to win the ICC Champions Trophy in 2009. Domestically, White played during the Renegades’ only BBL campaign in 2019.
Victoria’s longest-serving Sheffield Shield captain, White amassed more than 7000 first-class runs between his debut as a teenager in the summer of 2000-2001 and his final match in 2019.
