BCCI secretary Jay Shah will take over as the new ICC chairman

Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the new ICC chairman, replacing Greg Barclay. He will start his new job on December 1.

At 35, Shah, currently the BCCI secretary, is the youngest to hold the post. When Barclay, who has been the chairman of the ICC for two terms starting in 2020, has confirmed to the board that he will not continue for a third term, the board of directors had until August 27 to enter the names of the candidates for the next chairman. Only when more than one person was nominated was there an election, but Shah was the only one nominated.

“I am humbled to be appointed as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council,” Shah said in a statement. “I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member countries to advance cricket around the world. We are at a critical juncture where it is even more important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and launch our tent. events in new global markets. Our aim is to make cricket more inclusive and known more than ever.

“While we will build on the important lessons we have learned, we must also embrace new thinking and innovation to promote the love of cricket around the world. The inclusion of our sport in the LA 2028 Olympics represents a milestone in the growth of cricket, and I am sure it will take the sport forward in an unprecedented way.”

Shah is the fifth Indian to manage the ICC after Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar.

Barclay first took over as ICC chairman in 2020 for two years and was re-appointed in November 2022 for another two years. It was in 2022 that Shah became part of the ICC’s powerful Finance & Commercial Affairs (F&CA) committee and took over as its chairman in 2023.

After starting his cricket management career in the state of Gujarat in 2009, Shah has been the BCCI secretary since October 2019. He was re-appointed in 2022 and his tenure would continue till 2025. Once he took over as ICC chairman, he was re-elected. he will have to resign from his position in BCCI and F&CA committee of ICC. Shah was also the president of the Asian Cricket Council from 2021 to 2024.
