Bellingham hails England’s best performance at Euro 2024 so far

Jude Bellingham believes England’s win against Switzerland was their best performance at Euro 2024.

England advanced to the quarter finals after a series of disappointing performances in their previous matches and needing a lot of improvement.

Gareth Southgate fielded a back three with Kieran Trippier and Bukayo Saka as wing-backs, while Ezri Konsa came in to form the backline alongside Kyle Walker and John Stones.

Good performance by England in this tournament

It has to be said that England looked better and their pressing improved, but they still cheated and didn’t muster a direct shot in the first 45 minutes.

It wasn’t much better after the break, with England once again staring down the relegation barrel after Breel Embolo gave Switzerland a goal with just 15 minutes remaining.

Southgate quickly made a triple substitution introducing Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze and Luke Shaw, and five minutes later England were level thanks to a fine strike from Bukayo Saka.

Bellingham believes the win was England’s best performance of the tournament.

Neither team could find a winner and the game went to penalties with England scoring five free kicks with Trent Alexander-Arnold scoring the winning kick.

Bellingham, who also scored in the final and rescued England with a superb bicycle kick against Slovakia in the previous round, felt that England played very well in the tournament.

“Overall it was probably our best game of the tournament,” he told BBC One.

“We are very proud of the boys. Things you can’t always measure and see are character and mentality and we showed that again in the shooting game.

“For the subs to come and take a penalty under that pressure is something special, special.”

England arguably haven’t played well in any of their games at Euro 2024, but they are hard to beat and look like they could find a way to win which is a decent mix of tournament football.

Next up is the semi-final where they will face either the Netherlands or Turkey, with England only two wins away from winning the tournament.
