Benavidez’s Adjustment To Canelo: Obsession Or Promotional Strategy?

David Benavidez was talking more about Canelo Alvarez than he was about himself before his fight on Saturday night against Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

It’s not a good way for Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) to build interest in this crucial clash, which is a career setback for the 27-year-old Mexican Monster.

Canelo as a Promotional Tool

Some fans feel that Benavidez is using Canelo’s name to hype his fight with Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs) in a sly way to create interest in the fight instead of actually promoting it.

Is this a ploy by Benavidez to talk more about Canelo or is he obsessed with him as a hero idol?

Benavidez has talked about Canelo incessantly for years, and it’s troubling because it suggests he doesn’t have the confidence to create his own path without constantly mentioning the superstar’s name.

If you’re Canelo, this would seem like Benavidez is obsessed with him, and it’s no surprise that he wants nothing to do with him. It must be a bad feeling for Canelo to see someone come in on him and not lock him up night and day.

Benavidez Feels Deserving of Title Shot

“I’m moving up to 175 and making a name for myself,” said David Benavidez on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game YouTube channel, talking about how he was forced to move up to light heavyweight because he couldn’t get a shot at 168. .

“I’ve been ranked #1 for the last three years, and I had to fight for the belts. A guy with belts [Canelo Alvarez] you have all four. “So I should have been the joint champion three years ago,” said Benavidez.

Two-time WBC super middleweight champion Benavidez’s comments suggest he feels a lot of resentment towards Canelo for not getting his shot, which he feels he deserves. But even if Canelo had not taken the belt, it is possible that Benavidez would have cried the same, crying that he does not want to fight him, sounding unhappy because he will not give him what he wants.

Benavidez Feels He Did Everything Right

“What would you say if you had done your job very well and you are there? They promise you a promotion but you will never get a promotion because someone else doesn’t want to give it to you,” said Benavidez.

“I did everything to get the belts. I’m still the #1 contender [at super middleweight]and because of the money and the guy doesn’t want to fight me, that’s why I don’t get a chance for titles,” said Benavidez.

It seems that Benavidez’s cry for Canelo is an attempt at pity, playing the victim, and making him look depressed in the eyes of the fans. If Benavidez is serious about wanting to fight Canelo, talking about him too much doesn’t help.

“It’s not something I didn’t do in the end. I did everything right in the end,” said Benavidez. “He’s just someone with belts who doesn’t want to fight me. See [WBC] they can do the compulsion, but I don’t know why they don’t press the issue as they should.”

Boxing is a business, and if the judging panels don’t want to try to force Canelo or any champion to fight another fighter, so be it. Benavidez has to live with it. But it would help him if he accepts that Canelo is not willing to fight him and moves on instead of talking about it.

For Canelo, that should be very unpleasant because it is a behavior that is not normal in his internal structure. It’s clear that he doesn’t understand Benavidez’s obsession because that’s not how he works.

“Canelo is a cash cow. These sanctioning bodies, the WBC, IBF, WBA, and WBO, all receive a percentage. So because Canelo makes a lot of money, he gives each of these 3%. So, 3% of the money he makes on $40 million,” said Benavidez.

“They probably walked away with $2 million each. So because of that, they let him do whatever he wants to do, which is wrong with me. I feel like people want it and I’m the #1 spot, they should make that fight mandatory, but for some reason, they’re not.”

Benavidez does not understand that the sanctioning bodies cannot force Canelo to fight him, and they are not willing to try to do so. You can’t blame them for not wanting to take risks,

Benavidez Accuses Canelo of Picking Lightweight Fights

“He picks easy battles and rescues me until the end. You know very well that I am strong, very fast and the best in this weight class. I’m still the best at 168lbs. team, and I am the one who will dethrone Canelo,” said Benavidez.

If Benavidez is the best super middleweight, why didn’t he fight David Morrell Jr. while calling him out and giving him a title shot at his ‘regular’ 168-lb WBA belt? Why is Benavidez fighting at 175?

He will not be able to call himself the best fighter if he fights at light heavyweight and he is not willing to prove himself to be the best at 168 by fighting Morrell.
