In a surprising result, heavyweight contender Guido Vianello (13-2-1, 11 KOs) used his superior speed to defeat Arslanbek Makhmudov (19-2, 18 KOs) by eighth-round TKO at the 2:58 mark in co. -fight that took place on Saturday night at the Videotron Center in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.
Makhmudov, 6’6″, was moving too slowly to get out of the way of the fast right shot that 2016 Italian Olympian Vianello was hitting him with during the tournament.
Makhmudov’s left eye closed after the third round. It was surprising how quickly his eye closed due to swelling during the third round, but by the end of the round, it was completely closed due to his failure to get out of the way of Vianello’s heavy rights.
Makhmudov’s corner wanted him to stay close to cut down on shots from his right, but he didn’t do a good job. It turned the fight into a grueling affair, with Makhmudov running Vianello, catching him and leaning on him throughout the rounds.
In the sixth, the referee penalized Makhmudov for hitting Vianello with a rabbit fist. Makhmudov was injured by Vianello’s right hand in the seventh minute and appeared to hit the ground, but the referee failed to call it.
At the start of round 8, the ring doctor stopped the fight at 2:58 of the eighth round.
