Bruno Fernandes reveals the need to transfer to Man Utd
Bruno Fernandes has revealed that he wanted Manchester United to improve their squad before signing a new contract.
Talks of dissatisfaction emerged from the Portuguese player at the end of last season when he admitted that he could leave the Red Devils if they wanted to rebuild without him. However, the attacking player has signed a new three-year contract at Old Trafford.
United could only finish eighth – their worst return of the Premier League season – meaning they will not be playing in the Champions League this year despite rescuing their 2023/24 campaign with an FA Cup victory over Manchester City that helped manager Erik ten Hag . keep his job.
New owners INEOS have been busy during the summer transfer window, bringing in Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, and Fernandes admitted he is happy to see United making clear progress off the pitch.
He told the club’s website: “The club knew I wanted to compete with the top teams. They knew we needed to improve the team. And I think we are doing that.
“Obviously I said to them: “I don’t need you to promise me that we will win the league.” Because nobody can promise that. But at least we will have a team that will compete and be there. compete during the season, try to get silverware and compete at the highest levels.
“I think the club is doing that. They are trying to bring people in to get more quality players in the team; to get more competitive, [so everyone is] to fight for your place.
“But my first choice was to stay at the club. It wasn’t even the demands, but the things I wanted to see: the club going forward, [so] I could see the future in that. To be honest, I look now and I see that the club is making an effort for that. “
Fernandes started United’s first game in the Premier League last Friday as Zirkzee scored in a 1-0 win over Fulham.
