Calgary Flames Re-Sign Dustin Wolf to 2-Year Contract – Hockey Writers – Flames Transactions

On July 30, the Calgary Flames signed their starting point guard for the 2024-25 campaign: Dustin Wolf. He received a two-year contract worth $850,000 per season—the 23-year-old will also become a restricted free agent (RFA) in 2026.

Could Wolf be out in 2024-25?

With the release of Jacob Markstrom in the offseason, Wolf is the only real contender for the Flames’ starting job. Dan Vladar has been frustrating as a backup since getting that job in 2021-22—it’s time for the youngster to shine.

Wolf has been one of the best young netminders in the American Hockey League (AHL) for a long time. In league history, no one has won the Baz Bastien Award for best AHL goaltender more than him—he did it in 2021-22 and 2022-23. He has upside, but he’s not in the best shape.

Since hitting 50 games back in 2021-22, it’s been an up and down season for the Flames. Now that they have traded away most of the roster in the 2024 offseason, the front office is encouraging the team to lose. Wolf doesn’t have the best club in the world around him, though he’s not bad enough to run a surprise—he just has a long hill to climb.

Wolf gave the Flames upside between the pipes, but he struggled in 2023-24. With a .893 save percentage (SV%), 3.16 goals against average, and 10 more goals allowed than expected, it wasn’t a great showing from him.

But Wolf is much better than what he showed last season. It takes time to learn the ropes in the NHL, especially with a team with the ninth-worst record in the league. He may start to really impress while waiting for another deal, but only time will tell.
