Canadiens’ Justin Barron Injured on Jacob Trouba Hit – Hockey Writers – Montreal Canadiens

New York Rangers’ Jacob Trouba is at the center of another controversial chant Tuesday night — this time directed at Montreal Canadiens defenseman Justin Barron. While some have suggested the hit was reasonably clean and within the definition of an acceptable check by NHL standards, others have used Trouba’s history with hard hits as an irritant to question the validity of how clean this latest hit is.

During the game between the Rangers and the Canadiens on Oct. 22, Barron was speeding down the left side of the ice with the puck. As he entered the Rangers zone, it looked like Barron was trying to corral the puck right into the Ranger blue line when Trouba came flying past Barron in the chest and drove high.

At the time, the Rangers were leading 5-2 midway through the third period, and the hit led to a physical altercation between Trouba and Mike Matheson, who stepped in to defend his fallen teammate.

Barron fell asleep on the Rangers’ blue line and was helped by Canadiens staff, before being declared out for the night and heading straight to the team’s locker room.

Matheson was assessed a two-minute instigator penalty, a 10-minute misconduct, and five major game minutes and the Canadiens were forced to play without Matheson and Barron for the rest of the game.

As for the update on Barron, there is no immediate update following the game. However, the head coach, Martin St. Louis, said he felt the point of contact was Barron’s head and that there was no further update on his condition at the time.

Barron has 13 goals and 31 points in 101 games for the Canadiens over five seasons. He was the 25th overall pick by the Colorado Avalanche back in 2020.
