Canadiens Shut Out the Oilers 3-0 – Hockey Writers – Montreal Canadiens

The Edmonton Oilers faced the Montreal Canadiens in an all-Canadian game on Amazon Prime Monday Night Hockey. In this game, the Canadiens beat the Oilers 3-0. The Oilers have yet to score a goal on Amazon Prime, losing 3-0 in both games they have played.

This was an uneventful and scrappy hockey game. There was a lot of perimeter play, not a ton of quality chances. Even the goals scored were not in the most dangerous areas. If you bet on this game, I hope you took the under.

Recap of the game

After a scoreless first half, Brendan Gallagher opened the scoring for the Canadiens just 30 seconds into the middle frame. Mike Matheson took a wrist shot that was redirected high, up high, over Oilers goaltender Calvin Pickard.

Montreal extended its lead 5:52 into the third period with Kaiden Guhle’s second of the season. He took a wrist shot from the dot to the left that went to the short side, over the Oilers netminder’s blocker.

Edmonton pulled its goaltender with less than five minutes remaining, and Montreal added to the lead, eventually putting the game away on Jake Evans’ empty netter.

Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault was good, stopping all 30 shots he faced. Pickard wasn’t bad on the other end, making 22 saves on 24 shots for a .917 save percentage (SV%). However, maybe he would like this second goal at the back. The penalty kill for both teams was also perfect this time around, as all five attempts were successfully killed.
