Canelo Alvarez is being criticized online by fans reacting to the shocking news that he is planning to defend his unification super middleweight title against Edgar Berlanga on September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Fans aren’t interested in paying to see Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) defend against Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs), an undefeated fighter in his eight-year schedule.
Berlanga’s Soared Record Under Scrutiny
Some fans believe that Berlanga’s previous promoters at Top Rank purposely matched him with a bad junior level competition to help him build a winning record and introduce him to the New York public.
Berlanga knocked out his first 16 opponents in the first round, but his opponents were shocking. If the 27-year-old New Yorker had beaten at least one decent opponent, like Caleb Plant, the fans wouldn’t have been so furious about Canelo choosing him as his next sacrificial lamb on September 14th.
The matchup is considered another cherry picked for Canelo, 34, after his last three bouts were mismatches against this random pick:
- Jaime Munguia: 100% increased career resume
- Jermell Charlo: 154-pounder moving up two weight classes
- John Ryder: British domestic standard scrubbing
It is clear to the fans now that Canelo will continue to face this level of opposition for the rest of his career. A fight with these young guys could conceivably help extend the Mexican star’s career.
Fans will be upset if the price tag of Canelo vs. Berlanga is in the $80+ range on September 14. That type of fight should be heavily discounted in the $60 range, which is rarely seen these days at PPV events but is unlikely.
Lowering the price would be a good move on Canelo’s part. It will show his followers that he cares about them and understands their anger about this vote.
