Canelo’s Disappointing Options for Next Fight: Eubank Jr. Vs. Berlanga

Canelo Alvarez’s points for his next fight lie in two, Chris Eubank Jr. and Edgar Berlanga.

Dan Rafael says his sources say Eubank Jr. (33-3, 24 KOs) and Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) are both untitled super middleweight champion Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) considering.

Uninspiring Candidates

Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN Knockout reported last week that these were the two fighters Canelo was looking at, but now it has been confirmed that it could be one of them.

These are rotten options for Canelo to fight in September because no one deserves a golden ticket to a multi-million dollar retirement. Eubank Jr., 34, is old, unemployed, and not ranked in the top 15 of the super middleweight division. He fights at 160 and was knocked out by Liam Smith last year.

Berlanga’s Backdoor method

Picking Berlanga might send the wrong message to fans that it’s okay for fighters to look up to a bigger fighter by fighting scrubs to get to that spot. Indeed, 16 of Berlanga’s first 16 fights have ended by first-round knockout, and that’s not because he’s experimental.

Berlanga’s last win:

– Padraig McCrory
– Jason Quigley
– Traveler Alexis Angulo
– Marcelo Coceres

Those are the underdogs, and sadly, those are the best names in Berlanga’s eight-year run. When he got the chance to challenge David Morrell for his WBA ‘standard’ super middleweight title as a guarantee, he chose not to take it.

Eubank Jr., 34, wouldn’t be a bad pick for Canelo, but that fight would have to be fought in the UK to make sense. It will sell out over there, and English fans will be over the moon to see Canelo in person, fighting one of their countrymen.

Eubank Jr. he redeemed himself in his last fight, knocking out Liam Smith in the tenth round in their rematch on September 2, 2023. In their first fight last year, Eubank Jr. he was drafted in the fourth round last year.
