Canucks Beat Ducks 5-1, Quinn Hughes Hits 300 Goals – Hockey Writers – Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks (6-2-3) rolled into Anaheim on Tuesday night and handed the Anaheim Ducks (4-6-2) a 5-1 loss. Led by captain Quinn Hughes with three assists and two points from Kiefer Sherwood, Brock Boeser and Danton Heinen, they are now 2-0-0 in their California trip which concludes Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings. With three assists, Hughes recorded his 300th assist in his 376th game, surpassing the legendary Paul Coffey who did it in 377 games. Only Brian Leetch and Bobby Orr did it in fewer games.

Recap of the game

Before Hughes’ 376th start, the Ducks opened the scoring in the first half on a power play on a point shot by Olen Zellweger that found its way through traffic and past Kevin Lankinen. The Canucks responded later with Boeser’s sixth goal of the season, also on the power play, to tie the game at one. Soon after, Sherwood took a feed from Erik Brannstrom and quickly passed to Lukas Dostal to give his team a lead they would never relinquish.

Elias Pettersson slapped Hughes to make it 3-1 in the second period, giving Hughes his second assist of the night. The goal was initially given to the captain of the Canucks, but it was then changed to Pettersson, then back to Hughes, and finally it ended with Pettersson. The historic assist came in the third when Jake DeBrusk deftly tipped Boeser’s shot past Dostal to give the skating defenseman his 300th assist in just his 376th game. Heinen scored in his third game, and first since hitting two against the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 22.

Lankinen remains completely in control as a Canuck as he extends his record to 6-0-2. He was solid in net as well, stopping 21 of 22 shots. Dostal has been a busy goaltender and will see his overall percentage (SV%) improve a bit after this. He made 32 of 37 stops with an .865 SV%.

As mentioned above, the Canucks will face the Kings on Thursday to close out their short three-game road trip. The Ducks, on the other hand, will try for their first win in the six-game stretch when they face the Minnesota Wild on Friday.
