Carl Froch Calls for Deontay Wilder’s Retirement After Recent Loss

Podcast host Carl Froch thinks former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder needs to retire after his loss last Saturday against Zhilei Zhang in Riyadh.
Wilder’s decline is evident
Froch feels that the 38-year-old Wilder can no longer handle the punch, and he can no longer pull punches because his confidence is gone.
Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) has lost four of his last five fights, and has no faith in his ability to take a shot to throw his still-dangerous right hand.
We saw that last Saturday in Wilder’s fifth round TKO loss to ‘Big Bang’ Zhang (27-2-1, 22 KOs) at the Kingdom Arena and in Deontay’s previous loss to Joseph Parker last December.
Surprisingly, the Saudis were willing to use a faded Wilder in the main event of Queensberry vs. Matchroom 5 vs. 5 event because he was not ready to fight. The retirement speech that ‘Brazen Bomb’ made throughout the build was a clear sign that he was not in the ring as the host of the DAZN PPV.
Faulty Function
Even before the fight last weekend, fans on social media called for Wilder to retire because he looked so bad in his fight with Parker and this third fight with Tyson Fury in 2021. Fury got a lot of credit for his two wins over Wilder, but he didn’t deserve it.
Wilder was always flawed and had never beaten anyone good at work. Before the Fury fight, Wilder’s best wins were over Bermane Stiverne and 40+ year old Luis Ortiz. He gave Hell’s Fury, which tells you everything you need to know about the Gypsy King. He overdid it again.
“I think Deontay Wilder has gone too far. He looked shaky on the legs from the start,” said podcast host Carl Froch on the talksport Boxing YouTube channel, talking about Deontay Wilder’s loss to Zhilei Zhang last Saturday night.
“Do you still think he can knock people out with his right hand? If he does, he has no faith. Now that boxing is gone and the resistance to boxing is gone, I think it’s time for Deontay Wilder to retire. “
Yes, I agree with Froch. Wilder’s boxing resistance has decreased to the point where he can’t take any kind of shot without going nose to canvas. Zhang made Wilder look hurt in the second, third, and fourth rounds before putting him out of his misery in the fifth.
It wasn’t even remotely funny. Wilder looked nervous the whole time before Zhang finally finished him off. Why on earth did Eddie Hearn even pick Wilder for his 5 vs. 5? It’s obvious. He just saw Wilder as a name to bring in PPV buys, and it doesn’t matter if he has a solid chance of winning. His name was like a pulsar beam to attract fans.
“Now, Zhang has just been eliminated, and he has lost four of the last five fights. Now, it’s time to call the curtains on his career. He was beaten very badly. I was surprised when he got up because when he came down, he was really snoring, he’s gone.”
We knew Wilder was 100% washed before the Zhang fight, and it’s a shame he was used for the 5 vs. 5. There are many heavyweights who were better suited to fight on that card than Wilder. Hearn only has Anthony Joshua as a PPV fighter.
“He really got up and stood up, but he was in trouble. It seemed dangerous [for him]. I think Deontay Wilder needs to retire,” Froch stated the obvious.
Zhang’s future
“Zhilei Zhang is in his early 40s. He’s really slow, but he can punch, but what future does he have? It’s a tricky thing for him. I would like to put him with Anthony Joshua. “I think AJ beats him, but if he catches him, it would be a good fight,” Froch said of Zhang and his options.
“He’s part of the ‘need team,'” George Groves said of Zhang.
Groves is right. Zhang will not be used as an opponent for Anthony Joshua or Daniel Dubois for the following reasons:
– It is very dangerous
– Not popular
– Age
“He needs to fight AJ or Dubois, but like you said, he’s on the ‘Whoever needs him,'” Froch said of Zhang.
