Copa America 2024 Group C preview

The Copa America 2024 in the United States is looking up where the USMNT, Bolivia, Panama and Uruguay are in Group C.
Compared to Groups A and B, Group C — on paper — appears to be one of the four teams that could be folded before the tournament kicks off in late June. The USMNT and Uruguay will be the favorites to get out of the group and seal a safe passage to the quarter-finals, while Bolivia and Panama may find it difficult to generate any momentum in the group stage.
Even though Panama are the underdogs, they can still test the USMNT’s resolve — look back last summer to the team’s loss to Panama in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals on penalties. But, as we know, anything is possible in football, especially with Gregg Berhalter running the Stars and Stripes.
Here it is 90 minpreview of Group C in this summer’s Copa America.
As if it couldn’t get any worse, things got even more difficult in Bolivia when Marcelo Moreno hung up his boots. The veteran player will only miss out as he scored 31 goals in 104 games for Bolivia.
However, that doesn’t mean Bolivia doesn’t have a few decent players here and there. It will be tough, but if Bolivia are to pull something off in the group stage, you can expect Miguel Terceros, Carmelo Algaranaz and Rodrigo Ramallo to have some impact in Group C.
Panama has been successful for the past few years after qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. Despite their setback, Head Coach Thomas Christiansen guided Panama to the Gold Cup final against Mexico after their upset of the USMNT in the previous round of the tournament.
Despite falling to Mexico late, Panama has several quality players who can make things difficult for both Uruguay and the USMNT. MLS duo Anibal Godoy and Adalberto ‘Coco’ Carrasquilla will be two players to watch in the middle of the park and in attack, respectively. Andres Andrade looks to bring his strong form from Austrian outfit LASK to the contest, while Ismael Diaz remains a threat to the Central American nation’s wing.
The Star and Stripes enter Copa America 2024 not as favorites but perhaps as dark horse candidates under Berhalter. The US has plenty of talent to at least reach the quarter-finals and possibly the semi-finals, but that all depends on how they get through Group C.
Of course, Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Gio Reyna will be key for the USMNT if they want to make a deep run on home soil. The pressure will be on Berhalter to perform well this summer with the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, and the team’s exit will send shockwaves throughout the football world.
Like the USMNT, Uruguay also has a talented squad that will look to navigate South American giants Brazil and Argentina in their quest for glory. It’s a close call, but Uruguay may have the better team on paper compared to the US – especially with the likes of Darwin Nunez and Luis Suarez in front of goal.
Uruguay have what it takes to make a deep run in this tournament. Suarez will be looking to top his international career and Copa America 2024 could be the last time we see El Pistolero at Uruguay’s top competition.
