Coventry vs Tottenham: Preview, predictions and fixtures
Tottenham’s 2024/25 trophy hunt begins on Wednesday night as they face Championship side Coventry in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Ange Postecoglou put his neck on the line after his side’s disappointing performance in north London on Sunday, insisting his sides “always” win something in his second spell in charge.
Tottenham, however, have made a slow start to the campaign on points, collecting just four from as many Premier League outings. Postecoglou’s side have shown signs of progress from a possession point of view, but have struggled to create high-quality chances in the final third.
Their unproductive start and the club’s desperation to finally get some silverware means Wednesday’s game is all the more important for Postecoglou.
The north Londoners travel to a Coventry side who entered this season hoping to improve on their record, but their start to 2024/25 has been abysmal. Mark Robins’ side, who were in the FA Cup final last season, currently sit 14th in the Championship. A 1-0 win over Oxford United saw them progress to the third round of the competition.
Here it is 90 min preview of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third round match.

Midfielder Ben Sheaf has been largely absent for the home side, but it is hoped he will play again at the end of the month.
Joel Latibeaudiere scored in Coventry’s 1-1 draw with Watford at the weekend and is now a doubt for Wednesday’s cup tie. Robins will also be unable to call up Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Raphael Borges Rodrigues during the week.
The man facing Coventry’s third-round boycott, Brandon Thomas-Asante, may be forced to make an impact off the bench against Spurs.
Coventry predicted to play against Tottenham (4-5-1): Wilson; Van Ewijk, Binks, Thomas, Bidwell; Allen, Eccles, Mason-Clark, Rudoni, Wright; Simms.
Tottenham’s schedule will coincide with the start of the Europa League right away, but fans would love to see Ange name a strong starting XI for this home cup tie.
Richarlison is still out of the squad and it is not known whether he will be fit again, while Yves Bissouma is unlikely to feature after missing Sunday’s derby.
Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall are due to make their first starts of the season after impressing in pre-season, with Dominic Solanke continuing at the top in a bid to get up to speed following a few weeks out.
Tottenham predicted to face Coventry (4-3-3): Vicar; Porro, Romero, Dragusin, Davies; Gray, Sarr, Bergvall; Kulusevski, Solanke, Odobert.
This is a great game for Ange. An early trophy exit will put pressure on the Tottenham boss following a disappointing start to the new season.
Coventry also started slowly, but impressed at Vicarage Road on Saturday and should have walked away with all three points. This is a team that should be competing at the top of the Championship, and their FA Cup exploits mean they won’t be afraid of their visitors.
While a win at home won’t be a complete shocker, we’ll have the visitors back to sort things out in the bottom third on Wednesday to move into the fourth round.
Prediction: Coventry 1-3 Tottenham
