Cristiano Ronaldo has been praised by Portugal manager Roberto Martinez’s selfless attitude

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two outstanding goals in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Ireland on Tuesday night but it was his team’s performance that impressed manager Roberto Martinez the most.

Ronaldo, 39, beat Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher twice – both left-footed shots – in the second half in Portugal’s final friendly before Euro 2024.

That strike came after Joao Felix fired Portugal into the lead in Aveiro.

Ronaldo played the entire 90 minutes and attempted five shots in total.

He also created two chances for his teammates, including one from Diogo Jota in the last minute.

Speaking after the game, Martinez said about Ronaldo, as quoted The Independent: “His dedication as a captain is unbelievable. Today we saw two world-class goals, but I really enjoyed his performance.

“He had scored two goals but the first thing he did was to help his teammates. That shows unity and camaraderie, and are important values in the dressing room when you go to the Euros.

“But also the goals are very important and they were at the forefront.”

Later on Tuesday evening, Ronaldo took to social media to celebrate Portugal’s victory.

He posted a few photos of the game alongside the message: “Great winning team!”

Portugal will begin their Euro 2024 campaign on Tuesday against the Czech Republic.

The other two teams in their group are Turkey and Georgia.
