Cyclone warning leaves India stranded in Barbados after winning 2024 T20 World Cup
A typhoon warning has left the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team stranded in Barbados.
Hurricane Beryl (Category 4) is expected to pass over Barbados on Sunday night local time where the center of the storm is about 80 miles from the south coast. India is currently staying at the Hilton Hotel. They initially planned to stay home but the airport had been closed since Sunday evening. South Africa left earlier on Sunday.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the board is planning to entertain the winning team after they reach India.
“Like you, we are stuck here. After the travel plans are clear, we will think happily,” Shah told reporters in Barbados.

Team India will tour Sri Lanka for three T20Is and three ODIs from July 27.

Shah also said that “the seniors will be there” in next year’s Champions Trophy and the final of the World Test Championship, if India is able to enter it, and the decision on whether Hardik Pandya succeeds Rohit Sharma as the next T20I captain will be taken by the team alone. they don’t choose.
“The change has already happened as three greats have retired,” Shah said when asked about the next phase of the team following the T20I withdrawals of Virat Kohli, Rohit and [Ravindra] Jadeja.
“The way this team continues, we have set ourselves the goal of winning the finals of the World Test Championship and the Champions Trophy. We will have the same squad to play there. The seniors will be there.”
This means that the senior players, fitness permitting, are likely to feature in the nine ODI matches that India will play before the Champions Trophy scheduled for February-March 2025 in Pakistan.
India’s ODI assignments prior to that include three matches each against Sri Lanka (away), New Zealand (home) and England (home).
‘From Rohit to Virat, everything worked out’
India, who had lost a major final in the past decade, finally ended their title drought after losing two ICC finals – the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup final – in the last 12 months and Shah hoped the winning streak would continue.
“I would like India to win all the titles. We have great strength on the bench, only three players from this team are going to Zimbabwe. We can field three teams if necessary,” he said. “The way this team is progressing, we have set ourselves to win the World Test Championship and Champions Trophy finals. We will have the same squad to play there. The seniors will be there.”
Regarding Hardik’s performance in the T20 World Cup and the chances of him taking over the captaincy from Rohit, Shah said: “The captaincy will be decided by the selectors and we will announce it after discussing with them. You asked about Hardik, it was there. many questions about his form but the selectors showed confidence in him and he proved himself.”
India will next tour Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series starting on July 6 in Harare. Shubman Gill will lead the Indian side where a lot of seniors are rested. Shah also confirmed that the India A team will travel to Australia later in the year ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
