Dan Ashworth officially joins Man Utd as sporting director

Dan Ashworth has joined Manchester United as their new sporting director, leaving Newcastle United after a two-year stint.

United have long wanted to bring in Ashworth to head up their new recruitment structure under co-owners INEOS, but have struggled to negotiate with Newcastle.

The four-month standoff officially ended on Monday, when the two clubs confirmed Ashworth’s move to Old Trafford in a joint statement.

“Newcastle United and Manchester United have reached an agreement to immediately release Dan Ashworth from his contractual obligations to Newcastle United. The terms of this agreement remain confidential between the clubs. Newcastle United thanks Dan for his work and wishes him the best for the future,” reads the statement.

Reports on Monday revealed that United and Newcastle have reached an agreement to see Ashworth join the Red Devils.

The Magpies had previously demanded a compensation of around £20m to justify his departure apart from an extended period of gardening leave.

Ashworth joins United having overseen a successful spell at Newcastle. Before moving to Tyneside, he spent three years as technical director at Brighton & Hove Albion after five years as the FA’s director of development.

United are looking to strengthen their ranks ahead of the 2024/25 season. Recent reports say that they are in talks with Bayern Munich about defender Matthijs de Ligt, and it has also been suggested that they have not given up hope of signing Michael Olise from Crystal Palace.
