Golden Boy’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, revealed on Instagram this evening, he wrapped Devin Haney about celebrating his overturned decision in the Ryan Garcia fight and his doubts about the payment problems.
De La Hoya indicated that Haney’s sales were the reason for his payment problems since his fight with Ryan on April 20. He told Haney that he would audit his company to make sure he pays his fighters.
Oscar was also upset by the inconsistency in the PED penalties issued by the various sanctioning bodies. He pointed out that Ryan Garcia was given a harsher punishment than Canelo Alvarez and Shane Mosley.
Nevada faced the two. Conversely, the New York State Athletic Commission came down hard on Ryan, handing him a one-year suspension. De La Hoya says that there should be one commission so that the penalties are the same.
Interestingly, Ryan had complained early on about wanting to fight Haney in Nevada for tax purposes because New York has high state taxes. He realized that the fight would have been bigger if it had been in Las Vegas. If Ryan had had his way, he could have been looking at a shorter Nevada suspension without losing all that money.
De La Hoya Questions PED Penalties
“Okay, guys, everybody talked about Ryan Garcia. Now, it’s Pappy’s turn. First of all, I do not promote PEDs or anything,” said Oscar De La Hoya on Instagram. “But let’s talk about consistency, fines, and millions of dollars.
“I don’t understand it. We should have a commission overseeing everything in every state because Canelo Alvarez comes from a different state and gets six months. Shane Mosley gets a chance and gets a zero,” continued De La Hoya.
“So, you’re telling me Ryan Garcia gets a year and millions of dollars? That’s not right.
“You don’t sell”
“Let’s talk about Devin Haney now. Devin Haney, depressed. You dance in the bowling alley because you changed your mind. No one will forget that he beat you,” said De La Hoya.
Haney may find it important to continue his undefeated record because the networks may see him as more important, and die-hard boxing fans who stick with records will be impressed.
The network isn’t as focused on records as it is on ratings, and Haney didn’t prove to be a PPV attraction. That goes beyond his undefeated streak because undefeated players are so common now, given how sly promoters protect them to try to create fake superstars.
Some would argue that Haney is an example of a striker who has been well coached by his management and has benefited from being bigger than his opponents. Haney’s best wins have been over Vasily Lomachenko, George Kambosos, and Regis Prograis. Lomachenko was controversial.
In addition to those two, Haney had beaten older, shop-worn fighters. These were some of the notable fighters that Haney had defeated: Joseph Diaz, Jorge Linares, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Zaur Abdullaev, and Alfredo Santiago.
“Oh, and let’s not forget. You accuse me of not paying you. Bro, you don’t sell. That’s what matters. You can check out my company whenever you want. I pay every fighter, and I’m sure he got it from Canelo this time,” said De La Hoya.
Will Haney and his father, Bill Haney, take De La Hoya up on his request to check Golden Boy’s records to see if they are paying their fighters?
“So, bro, that’s a one-year layoff, that’s retirement. Just enjoy. F*** you,’ said De La Hoya to Haney.
Devin probably won’t take a year off if he promises good money to someone he knows he can beat. He would probably agree if the Saudis waved more dough under Haney’s nose to fight in Riyadh with a soft touch. There should be more, especially if the fighter is good.
