Emilio Gonzalez, the Mexican champion playing on the PGA Tour in his home country, has been disqualified from the tournament after officials determined he had committed a “misconduct” violation.

According to the PGA Tour, the 27-year-old broke the rules while playing the 15th hole at El Cardonal at Diamante in Friday’s second round of the World Wide Technology Championship. Gonzalez hit his shot in the desert in the hole, hit a temporary ball, looked for the first one, but failed to make “reasonable efforts” to identify the ball found under the rules that allocated a three-minute search time again. he continued to play part-time football.

That was a no-no, according to Rule 18.3c (3), which states in its last paragraph:

“If the temporary ball is not a ball in play and there is a ball that may be the first ball, the player must make every effort to see that ball. If the player fails to do so, the Committee may eject the player under Rule 1.2a if it determines that this was unsportsmanlike conduct.”

Gonzalez, who plays on a sponsor’s release, is interviewed Universal Deportes after the round, but it turns out he wasn’t asked about the withdrawal. Notably, Gonzalez shot rounds of one-over 73 and one-under 71 and would have missed the cut by two shots.

This year, Gonzalez played 25 events on the Korn Ferry Tour, recording 10 top-10 finishes, seven top-25 finishes and 16 cuts. He also played in one PGA Tour event, the Houston Open, where he shot rounds of 73, 68, 72 and 71 to tie for 74.

Gonzalez is scheduled to play in the PGA Tour’s Q-School, scheduled for next month at TPC Sawgrass’ Dye’s Valley Course and Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The top five and tie will earn promotion to the Tour.
