Ederson’s future at Manchester City is uncertain, admits Guardiola

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, admitted that goalkeeper Ederson’s future was not in his hands amid rumors of a move to Saudi Arabia.

Al-Ittihad are widely credited with an interest in the Brazil international, who has been at City for seven years and has been instrumental in six Premier League wins and Champions League success in 2023.

Ederson came on at half-time in City’s first pre-season game in North Carolina last night – a 4-3 defeat to Scottish champions Celtic – after which Guardiola admitted he was unsure whether the 30-year-old would still be at the club. come early season.

He said: “He should see maybe other ways. Yes, I would like him to stay but it depends on other clubs.

“I don’t know the situation. No contacts in the last days. It’s a question of training, being with us until the end of the transfer window and we’ll see.

“We have three amazing goalkeepers, especially these two who play regularly. It is a really important position. What we have is perfect but until the last day of the transfer window anything is possible.”

Losing such an important player will mean Guardiola dips into the transfer market to sign another goalkeeper, although he is not a number as Stefan Ortega impressed when given the chance last season.

Phillips may also leave City

Another player whose job at City looks questionable is midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips failed to hold down a regular place at the Etihad after signing from Leeds in 2022 while a loan spell at West Ham failed to convince England boss Gareth Southgate that he deserved a place in his Euro squad.

The 28-year-old played the first half against Celtic with Guardiola suggesting Phillips knows he will continue.

He said: “I don’t know what will happen. He knows the situation, and we will see.”
