Edgar Berlanga Delivers “Different” Test to Canelo Alvarez

Edgar Berlanga believes he brings more problems to Canelo Alvarez than the guys he faced during his career.

The undefeated Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) thinks he has the right ingredients to trouble undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo in September if he chooses him as his opponent. Canelo has not yet raised his hand to indicate whether he will bless Berlanga with the opportunity to pay him.

If Canelo chooses to fight Berlanga, it would open up an opportunity for promoters to match their fights in a way that they could quickly put on payday without having to match up against a tougher team. It would be a bad thing for the fans.

“I know he’s fought big boxers and everybody, but I feel with me, it’s different,” Edgar Berlanga told Cigar Talk, talking about Canelo Alvarez, who he hopes to fight in September. “I will bring something different to the table.”

This player who was once promoted to Top Rank, Berlanga does not explain what he means when he says that he “brings something different to the table” than Canelo from the guys he has fought with. If you compare Berlanga to Gennadiy Golovkin, you can just tell that Edgar doesn’t have the power, skills, and resume that he had before his first fight with Canelo.

Berlanga, 27, is one of two fighters Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is believed to be considering for his next title defense. Jermall Charlo, a former two-division world champion, is one.

Neither fighter is a good match for Canelo, as they haven’t won any serious competition recently. On the other hand, Berlanga has never fought an A-level fighter during his eight-year career.

Berlanga from New York is still in the future phase of his career. However, surprisingly the World Boxing Association gave Berlanga the #1 ranking in their organization after he recently defeated a boxer named Padraig McCrory by knockout in the sixth round earlier this year on February 24 in Orlando, Florida.

Berlanga was given the opportunity to fight WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell when he became mandatory earlier this year after defeating McCrory but chose to move on in hopes of being nominated by Canelo.

It would have looked better if Berlanga had taken the fight with Morrell because it would have put him in a strong position to be chosen by Canelo.
