On August 14, as England Cricket Board (ECB) recalled Archer’s Test debut on social media, a fan was delighted when he appeared in Archer’s limited test, saying, “13 Test caps in about 5 years. What a waste.” Archer, known for his calmness on the field, did not hold back online.

He answered quickly, “How much did you play?”– a response that went quickly, showing his frustration with the continued criticism surrounding his injury career. Archer’s response not only silenced the troll but also highlighted the immense pressure and scrutiny professional athletes face, especially when battling through injuries and trying to bounce back.

The first Archer’s Test and early success

Archer made an immediate impact when he made his England debut in the 2019 Ashes series against Australia. Named in the squad for the first Test but dropped from the eleven for the final due to injury recovery, Archer was included in the second Test and quickly proved his worth. He took his first Test wicket by dismissing Australia Cameron Bancroftt and went on to achieve his first five-wicket haul in the third Test, with figures of 6 for 45. His 22 wickets in four matches during the series cemented his status as one of the fastest bowlers in the game.

Challenges and returns

Despite his impressive start, Archer’s Test career has been hampered by injuries. After undergoing two elbow surgeries in 2021 and missing most of the 2022 season with a back injury, Archer returned to international cricket in 2023. In his latest international appearance, Archer has done well in the game T20 World Cup 2024taking eight wickets in eight matches at an average of 19 and an economy rate of 7.22.

He plans to take part in the County Championship matches in 2024 as part of preparations for a possible return to the 2024-25 Ashes series.
