Enzo Fernandez’s case is closed, Chelsea said after the Argentine midfielder apologized

Enzo Fernandez will not face formal disciplinary action from Chelsea after issuing a face-to-face apology to team-mates who were angered by his racist post on social media.

The video showed Argentina’s players repeating a chant questioning the legacy of France’s black and mixed-race players shortly after Fernandez helped them retain their Copa America title with a win over Colombia on July 14.

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana described the video as “unbridled racism” while other French teammates were reportedly equally unhappy.

Fernandez returned from an extended break to join his club-mates on their pre-season tour of the United States yesterday and is believed to have issued an immediate apology and pledged a large voluntary donation to an anti-racism organisation.

Chelsea, who will match the offer, now consider the case closed, although FIFA is continuing its investigation and could still punish the 23-year-old.

It does not help the new coach Maresca

It is an unwanted distraction for new coach Enzo Maresca, who insisted last week that there would be “no problems at all” with Fernandez’s return.

Captain Reece James, who is understood to have played a leading role in the club’s partnership with Fernandez, spoke differently, admitting last week that it could be a “problem”.

Chelsea’s visit to the United States did not go well in preparation as Maresca’s side drew 2-2 with League One Wrexham before being beaten 4-1 by Scottish champions Celtic.

Next up is Manchester City on Saturday.
