Erik ten Hag is not the reason why Matthijs de Ligt made Man United leave
New Man United player Matthijs de Ligt said Erik ten Hag was not the reason for his move to the Premier League as the defender opened up about his decision to leave Bayern Munich this summer.
The defender’s career has not gone as many expected after announcing to the world Ajax’s memorable 2018/19 season under Ten Hag.
The Dutch coach has brought out the best in De Ligt, which has not been seen at Juventus and Bayern Munich in recent years. This summer, the 25-year-old decided to reunite with his former Ajax boss at Man United but said the 54-year-old was not the only reason why he moved to Manchester.
“Erik ten is not the only reason I joined Manchester United,” said De Ligt Vandaag Inside by Fabrizio Romano. “We are talking about Manchester United here, one of the biggest teams in the world.
“There is a lot of pressure because the fans are used to the old stuff, now it’s up to us.”
Matthijs de Ligt has been given a tough job at Man United
De Ligt was brought to Man United this summer as part of a €50 million deal from Bayern Munich and has been tasked with strengthening the Red Devils’ defense alongside fellow newcomer Leny Yoro.
The centre-back has been a problem for the Ten Hag since his move to Old Trafford and although it is still early days, this season does not look like it will be fixed.
Man United’s defense has looked shaky in the first three Premier League games and was torn apart last time out against Liverpool. De Ligt has a tough job on his hands if he is to help improve the Manchester club’s backline and his reasons for joining the club should be worth it as the coming months will require some serious work.
