Euri Cedeño aims for a statement win against Dormedes Potes on the Teofimo-Claggett undercard

Euri Cedeño hopes to send a message to the rest of the middleweight division at the expense of his upcoming opponent.

Cedeño will face goalkeeper Dormedes Potes on Saturday night at the James L. Knight Center in Miami Beach, Florida. The eight-round fight will take place on the Top Rank on ESPN card, headlined by a 12-round bout between Ring junior welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez and Steve Claggett.

Cedeño-Potes will be broadcast live on ESPN+ (6:30 pm ET/ 3:30 pm PT).

Cedeño (8-0-1, 7 knockouts), who lives in La Romana in the Dominican Republic, last fought on February 16, also on the Top Rank card, stopping Antonio Todd in the fifth round. In his last fight on December 8, Cedeño defeated Yoanki Urrutia in an undefeated middleweight title fight.

Manager Trifon Petrov has high hopes that Cedeño will continue to improve and press his way towards contender status. According to Petrov, a surprise win over Potes would show that Cedeño is a cut above all other undefeated or top prospects in the division.

“Euri is fighting another seasoned veteran with many high hopes in the sport and none of them have been able to win a title against Dormedes Potes,” Petrov told The Ring on Tuesday afternoon. “Euri’s aim on Saturday night is to be the first person to stop Potes.

“I believe that he will win by a landslide and continue to prove himself as one of the emerging players in the world.”

Cedeño, promoted by Marshall Kauffman, has won his last two fights since a split decision against undefeated Dayan Depestre on October 27.

The 24-year-old has been very active over the past year, fighting six times, including Saturday’s fight against Potes. Cedeño recently fought IBF world welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis against Jesus Ramos who is the junior middleweight champion.

Potes (14-6-1, 10 KOs), who hails from Barranquilla, Colombia and now lives in nearby Fort Lauderdale, lost a decision to undefeated Francis Hogan. Potes fought again on the same card on December 8, losing a unanimous decision to Etoundi Michel William.

The 31-year-old has lost four of his last six fights. One of the two contenders is against Marcos Osorio-Betancourt, who entered the fight 11-0-1.
