Exclusive: Fabrizio Romano on how Man City can replace a player close to a transfer exit
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has detailed what Manchester City could look like to replace Julian Alvarez as he moves closer to completing his move to Atletico Madrid.
Specially speaking CaughtOffside In the latest edition of his Daily Briefing column, Romano suggested that Man City could try to target a different type of player to replace Alvarez, who was Erling Haaland’s back-up at the Etihad Stadium.
The Argentinian has struggled to get regular playing time at City, so his move makes sense, but he has also proven to be a useful replacement option, so Romano has made it clear that internal discussions will take place to decide what type of attacker he will be. in filling that role, albeit in a slightly different way.

“We’ve had a lot of progress on a couple of big deals in a crazy area around Europe and the first of those is ‘here we come’ for Julian Alvarez to move from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid. A record sale for Man City – €75m confirmed and €20m in add-ons,” said Romano.
“So that would be a potential sale of €95m for a player that Man City signed for just £14m a few years ago – incredible business for the Premier League champions. Of course it’s also an exciting signing for Atletico Madrid, who are getting top talent up front, so it’s good for both clubs.
“It will be completed soon, Alvarez will sign a five-year contract. Alvarez has already spoken to Diego Simeone, who was really keen to push through the move.
“Man City will now look for ways to replace Alvarez, definitely. It could be a striker, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up considering players from the flanks and maybe play with a false nine when Erling Haaland won’t be available. Discussions are ongoing internally to decide on the next step, so we will have to wait and see the outcome of those discussions.”
