Fans erupt as Ravichandran Ashwin blasts six-fers past Bangladesh, guiding India to victory in the Chennai Test
Ravichandran AshwinThe performance of the whole area was the basis of India‘s comprehensive victory over Bangladesh to Day 4 of the first test held in Chennai on Sunday (September 22). Ashwin showed his class with both bat and ball, scoring a crucial century (113 off 133 balls) in India’s first innings and taking six wickets (6/88) in Bangladesh’s second innings. His contributions were crucial as India set themselves a massive target of 515 runs and ended up winning by 280 runs, starting the series on a high note.
India’s strong start and significant contributions
Despite the early hiccups, India managed to post a solid total of 376 in their first innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal he pitched an innings with a patient 56, but that was it Ravindra Jadeja (86) and Ashwin’s counter-attack partnership rescues India from 144/6. Their stand saw India reach a competitive score, while Bangladesh Hasan Mahmud shining with figures of 5/83, giving the visitors hope but failing to stop the Indian lower order from accumulating runs.
Bangladesh are crumbling under the pressure
Bangladesh failed to respond, being bowled out for 149 in their first innings. Jasprit Bumrah led the Indian bowling attack, taking 4/50, with Akash Nzulu and Jadeja providing adequate support. Bangladesh’s batsmen struggled against relentless Indian bowling, failing to mount a serious challenge, leaving them with a huge deficit to overcome.

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant stand out in India’s 2nd innings
India’s second innings declaration at 287/4 was propelled by some outstanding centuries Shubman Gill (119*) and Rishabh Pant (109). Their smooth stroke play extended India’s lead and allowed Rohit Sharma to declare with confidence. The partnership not only strengthened India’s dominance but ensured that Bangladesh would face an insurmountable target of 515 for victory.

While Bangladesh’s second innings showed brief signs of resistance, with Najmul Hossain Shanto (82) again Shadman Islam (35) batting, Ashwin again became the main destroyer. His six-wicket haul, supported by Jadeja’s three wickets, dismantled the batting order, bowling out Bangladesh for 234 runs. India closed the match with a huge victory of 280 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Ashwin ended up being named the Player of the Match for his impressive all-round performance with the bat and the ball.
