Fatima Sana named Pakistan captain for 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup

This will be 22-year-old Fatima’s debut as Pakistan captain in T20Is or any ICC event. He has previously captained the national team twice in ODIs, including the famous Super Over against New Zealand at Hagley Oval when he represented Dar.

Apart from the captaincy change made by the national selection committee, the Pakistan team is sitting pretty, with only one change to the squad that visited Sri Lanka for the Women’s T20 Asia Cup last month. Batter Sadaf Shamas, who was also part of the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023, replaced wicketkeeper Najiha Alvi.

The 10 players who made it to the final quota for the 2023 T20 World Cup are part of the 15-member squad. They include Aliya Riaz, Muneeba Ali, Nashra Sandhu, Omaima Sohail, Sadia Iqbal, Sidra Amin, Tuba Hassan, Shamas, Dar and Fatima. Left-arm spinner Sadia’s selection is less than solid while left-arm seamer Tasmia Rubab is also part of the squad.

Pakistan also named Alvi, who had been left out of the senior squad, as a traveling reserve. Rameen Shamim and Umm-e-Hani are non-tourist sites.

The Women’s T20 World Cup is underway in the UAE from October 3. Pakistan are in Group A with Australia, India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. A revised schedule for the tournament has not been announced after it was moved from Bangladesh last week.
