First Second Cookie Shop: July 1-7

This week’s first two picks are the ol’ “Yeah”. It’s really bad out there, folks. How bad is it? In the lower tiers are 18 pitchers who qualify as Oatmeal Cookies or better. That’s equal to the number of Fortune Cookies. And I felt like I was stretching some of those usable tiers.

Good luck this week, everyone. We will need it.

The following are our guesses at the time of writing as to who will start two games this week, but the weather, injuries, and secret team management mean they are just that: guesses. To stay as up-to-date as possible, consult Rudy Gamble’s invaluable Streamonator.

Chocolate Chip Cookies (A Must-Start)

They are the kings of the cookie world for a reason. A warm, freshly baked chocolate chip cookie makes you feel good. It’s kind of like setting your rosters you know you’re getting two this week from these guys.

Grayson Rodriguez, Bal @SEA @OK
Zack Wheeler, Phi @CHC @ATL
  • At the time of writing we have Wheeler penciled in to start Tuesday for the Phillies. However, there are many chances that Michael Mercado will take that chance. You will start Wheeler no matter what, note that it may only be one start. You don’t want to use Mercado.

Sugar Cookies (Must Start)

They went well. You could certainly do a lot worse than having these guys on your list, but don’t expect it to be spectacular.

Mitch Keller, Pit STL NYM
Reynaldo Lopez, Atl SF PHI
Hunter Brown, Hou @TOR @MIN
  • I think Lopez has been in this column more than any other pitcher this season. I don’t think he’s ever done two games in a week. Maybe this is the week!

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies (Can Start)

This is not for everyone. These are the jars that can be a happy surprise, or they can ruin your church. Step slowly.

  • How low is Gil? However, his last two outings have been more difficult. Maybe just a blip. These things happen with small pots, after all. However, he is already in 85 IP this season after totaling 25 the past two years. I totally understand using him this week if you have him, but his placement at this level has me voicing my doubts about both his short-term and season predictions.

Fortune Cookies (Don’t Start)

Yes, they are technically cookies. Hold on, what does that little piece of paper say? “Bad times pass.” Oh. Oh well.

  • Streamonator rated Rodriguez much higher than I did this week. I don’t understand why. He is not beautiful. (Watch him have two good trips just to get my attention.)
  • Technically we listed him as Erick Fedde lined up for double duty this week, but he’s more flagged than Flexen. If you see that he is indeed named to begin with, it is worth considering.
