First Second Cookie Shop: May 6-12

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace returns to theaters this weekend to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Do you remember how excited people were for its release? There were people camping weeks to be the first in line to see it. The wait for Star Wars to return to theaters has been a long one. But now, it was back! Then they saw it.

I remember trying so hard to convince myself that it was good. It was Star Wars! Yes it was good! But it wasn’t like that. I, and many others, just didn’t want to accept that, sure enough, Star Wars was back. But it wasn’t what we hoped it would be.

on monday, Walker Buehler will return to the top of the league. People have been waiting a long time to see it. Remember how cute he was? He was so nice! And now he’s back! People can’t wait to add him back to their list. But…should it?

I was there on opening weekend The Phantom Menace. And, in one league, I’ve got him hidden, maybe I’ll have Buehler in my lineup. However, this was his second Tommy John surgery, and those have a history of being harder to come back from than the first. Additionally, the previews we got from the kids didn’t inspire much confidence that greatness was on the way. Maybe he’ll come out on Monday and be the ace we remember. But don’t panic if the results are more dangerous for your team than the new hope.

The following are our guesses at the time of writing as to who will start two games this week, but the weather, injuries, and secret team management mean they are just that: guesses. To stay as up-to-date as possible, consult Rudy Gamble’s invaluable Streamonator.

Chocolate Chip Cookies (A Must-Start)

They are the kings of the cookie world for a reason. A warm, freshly baked chocolate chip cookie makes you feel good. It’s kind of like setting your rosters you know you’re getting two this week from these guys.

Sugar Cookies (Must Start)

They went well. You could certainly do a lot worse than having these guys on your list, but don’t expect it to be spectacular.

Zac Gallen, Ari @CIN @BAL
Seth Lugo, KC The MIL @LAA
Triston McKenzie, Cle DET @CWS
Luis Gil, NYY Hou @TB
  • Gallen is down for two reasons. First, he didn’t start at all this past week due to a pulled hamstring. It’s probably okay, but seeing him start without frustration would make me feel better. Second, the jump to Cincinnati and the Orioles is less than ideal. He’s still a beginner, obviously, but it’s enough for me to lower him from his usual height.
  • I (and Streamontor) admittedly have a higher McKenzie than you would expect from someone with only a good start so far. But do you see those matchups?

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies (Can Start)

This is not for everyone. These are the jars that can be a happy surprise, or they can ruin your church. Step slowly.

Mitch Keller, Pit LAA CHC
Tyler Anderson, LAA @PIT KC
Kyle Harrison, SF @COL CIN
Colin Rea, Mil @KC STL
Logan T. Allen, Cle DET @CWS
Emerson Hancock, Sea @MIN OAK
  • Keller has been awful this season. But he’s also one of those guys who can turn it around and start producing great results in any given outing. The question is, are you willing to take that chance that it will happen this going out?
  • While I’m much lower on Keller than Streamontor is this week, I’m much higher on Tyler Anderson. I agree that it will be a risky play based on his low, not-so-good numbers. But he’s also been getting results so far, and those matchups aren’t very productive. He’s at this level for a reason, but I hate the idea of using him.
  • Aside from the matchups, I don’t know why Streamonator likes Allen as much as he does this week, having him so much higher than me. His actual performance thus far has been poor, and the numbers back it up. However, his last outing was good with those matchups there is seductive.

Fortune Cookies (Don’t Start)

Yes, technically cookies. Hold on, what does that little piece of paper say? “Bad times pass.” Oh. Oh well.

  • With Christian Scott added to the rotation this weekend, and so far no announcement that anyone will be moved to the fold, Manaea could start once this week. That could be good if you’re in a position to use him, because it’s always better not to rely on a middle-of-the-pack pitcher against the Braves. You might prefer not to use him at all for now, though.
  • It could be Mitch White who gets a shot in the Giants rotation. It could be Sean Hjelle. It is unclear at the time of writing. Whoever it is, you don’t want to use them.
