Former Man Utd star Anthony Martial of Flamengo is falling
Brazilian club Flamengo have ended negotiations with Manchester United striker Anthony Martial, according to reports.
The 28-year-old is currently unpaid after his contract at Old Trafford expired in July.
Martial left United after nine years at the club, arriving from Monaco in 2015. During that time, he played 317 times in all competitions, scoring 90 goals and 47 assists while lifting the FA Cup, EFL Cup, Europa League and Community Shield honours.
However, Martial has struggled with fitness and according to Transfermarkt, has missed 94 games due to injury during his time at Manchester United – and on loan at Sevilla for the second half of 2021/22.
However, Martial’s talent has caused a lot of interest this summer.
Flamengo’s Anthony Martial talks fall through
Brazilian giants Flamengo have highlighted Martial as a key target recently after star striker Pedro suffered a serious knee injury which is expected to keep him out for a long time.
However, according to a report from Meia Hora (via The Sun), the talks have broken down.
The report says that Martial’s demands are ‘unworkable’, as the 30-time Frenchman is insisting on a three-year contract and demanding higher wages from Flamengo.
According to Capology, Martial earned a total of £13m in his last season with Manchester United. That was enough to put him level with Mason Mount, with Marcus Rashford (£15.6m), Raphael Varane (£17.68m) and Casemiro (£18.2m) earning more.
That equates to £250k a week. Even if Martial took a huge fee, Flamengo will find it difficult to match his demands as Chelsea defender David Luiz is their highest paid player at the moment at £39k per week (per Salary Sport).
