Welcome to Play Smart, GOLF.com’s regular game improvement column that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.
There are few players in the game who swing more easily than Fred Couples. It looks like he doesn’t even try, but the ball always explodes on the axis. When he hits balls in range, you can’t help but stop and admire them.
The way Couples swings the club makes golf look easy. He just put the stick back and let it rip. It is the perfect combination of balance and power. If you’re looking to model your next, Couples’ is a great place to start.

When Lovers goes back, he thinks of only one thing: completing a full shoulder turn upwards.
“I think every top player or every person who plays well wants to do that,” he said. “And when I get the shoulder going back, I don’t think about changing direction, it just happens.”
On the downswing, Lovers feels his hips open from the previous impact – but he doesn’t let the clubhead follow. Instead, you want the clubhead to release the target line after making contact with the ball.
If he were to allow the clubhead to start following the hip after impact, he would be swinging more from the outside to the inside, which would make it difficult to generate power. So instead, you want to focus on releasing the clubhead down the target line.
“I release the club down the line,” Couples said. “So learn to clear your hips and let the club come down the line and release it.”
When a Lover does that, it makes it easier for him to generate useless energy.
