From Gautam Gambhir to Harbhajan Singh: Cricket teams mourn death of India legend Anshuman Gaekwad

The old one India cricketer and head coach Anshuman Gaekwad He passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 71 after a long battle with blood cancer. Diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare form of blood cancer, Gaekwad was undergoing treatment at King’s Hospital in London before returning to Mumbai last month.

During his treatment, Gaekwad faced a huge financial burden. His former partners, incl Ravi Shastri, Kapil Dev, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sunil Gavaskar again Mohinder Amarnathhe begged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) providing financial assistance. Responding to this call, the BCCI allocated INR 1 crore for Gaekwad’s treatment.

Gaekwad played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India, scoring 1,985 runs and 269 runs, respectively. His highest Test score came with it Pakistan, where he scored an unbeaten 201 in Jalandhar, spending 671 minutes at the crease. Known for his strong and determined batting style, Gaekwad has left an indelible mark on Indian cricket as a player and as a coach.

Last days

After spending more than a year in London for treatment of blood cancer, Gaekwad returned to Baroda last month and eventually succumbed to multiple health complications. His death marks the end of an era for many in the cricket world, who remember him for his significant contributions to the game.

Former Indian cricketer and current Indian coach, Gambhir also paid tribute to Gaekwad. “Ansuman Gaekwad was not only a brilliant cricketer but a mentor to many. His passing away is a great loss to Indian cricket. My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time,” Gambhir wrote in X.
