The Giants recently signed a catcher Donny Sands on a minor league contract. The 28-year-old made his major league debut at Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, going 0-5 with three strikeouts.
This was Sands’ first collegiate action of the 2024 season. The Tigers released him at the end of March. Sands had a short stint in Mexico, making 16 appearances for Toros de Tijuana. He hit .245/.339/.490 with four home runs to earn another crack at Triple-A pitching.
Sands spent much of the last year with Detroit’s top executive in Toledo. Acquired during the 2022-23 offseason Matt Vierling again Nick Maton in submitting the agreement Gregory Soto to Philadelphia, Sands hit .225/.318/.353 in 371 plate appearances with the Mud Hens. He never appeared in an MLB game against Detroit. The Tigers removed Sands from the 40-man roster in January and released him after going 1-8 in Spring Training.
So far in his career, Sands has appeared in three major league games — all of which came with the Phillies in 2022. He will provide temporary cover for a team dealing with two injuries behind the plate. Patrick Bailey he is on the head injury list. Tom Murphy will be out until at least July because of the left knee.
The bullies signed Curt Casali in the big leagues late last week. He and him Blake Sabol they share catching duties at the MLB level until Bailey returns. Jackson Reetz, on the 40-man roster, is on optional assignment to Sacramento. Sands is linking him to the River Cats as a potential contender for the third-string role.
