Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez-Yuniel Dorticos WBA Mandatory Title Fight

Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez has his marching orders.

The newly crowned WBA cruiserweight champion has been called up for his next fight against two-time champion Yuniel Dorticos. Both sides were notified on July 1 to enter a 30-day negotiation period to reach the terms.

Ramirez is a free agent for the promotion but will likely continue working with Golden Boy Promotions, with whom he signed through 2021. Dorticos is promoted by Warriors Boxing and The Heavyweight Factory.

The canceled fight comes three months after Mexico’s Ramirez (46-1, 30 knockouts) dethroned longtime reigning but wildly ineffective Arsen Goulamirian. Ramirez defeated the California-based Armenian via a twelve-round decision on March 30 in Inglewood, California.

It was the second title debut for Ramirez, a 33-year-old fighter who held the WBO super middleweight belt. He did well in the competition on Nov. 2022 WBA 175-pound titleholder Dmitry Bivol (23-0, 12 KOs). It’s been two wins since moving up to cruiserweight, with Ramirez ranked No. 4 by The Ring.

Miami’s Dorticos (27-2, 25 KOs) previously held the WBA ‘Regular’ and ‘Super cruiserweight titles and the IBF belt.

The 38-year-old Cuban fighter lost both World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) cruiserweight belts. He was stopped at 12th round by Murat Gassiev in the semifinals of Feb. 2018 for WBSS and the unification battle between the undefeated titles.

Dorticos advanced to the WBSS finals for the second season, but dropped a twelve-round decision to Mairis Briedis (28-3, 20 KOs). Only three fights followed, all ending in knockouts. Dorticos ended an eighteen-month layoff with a first-round stoppage of Alan Campa on June 8 in Hollywood, Florida.

According to WBA rule C.13, no boxer can enter another fight until the terms are satisfied by all parties of the contest. Likewise, Ramirez is obligated to honor his obligation as the newly crowned champion in accordance with WBA rule C.12.
