Golf Business News – Council is looking for a new owner/operator for Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Centre

Middlesbrough Council has instructed estate agents HMH Golf & Leisure to deliver Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Center marketing, and invited tenders by 6 December.

The resort, first opened in 1977, is located on the outskirts of Middlesbrough, with amenities including an 18-hole, 6,326-yard, par 71 golf course; a 20-bay floodlit range; practice the ground and practice putting green; two-storey clubhouse 957 sq m; a separate golf shop and putting green, and two three-bedroom semi-detached houses.

Chris Cooke, Mayor-elect and Executive Member for Aged Social Care & Community Health, said: “Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Club is a fantastic venue, which is why we are looking for a new and experienced operator to not only look after the course and clubhouse, but. and meeting the Council’s objective of ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to play the great game of golf for years to come.”

“The chosen operator will require Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Center to be maintained as a paid playing facility, which means it can be visited by anyone, and is expected to promote golf participation and lifestyle. Our preference is to receive lease offers but freehold offers may be viewed with a strong understanding that the land should remain in golf use.”

Proposals for Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Center will be assessed not only on the terms of the proposed financial bid, but also on how interested operators can demonstrate their ability to meet the Council’s objectives, which include:

  • To maintain existing golf facilities for the benefit of local residents.
  • Protecting the operator with local knowledge.
  • To encourage increased participation in golf.
  • Ensuring capital investment in institutions
  • To encourage more community outreach programs.

Ben Allen at HMH said: “Following our recent successful marketing of Tapton Park Golf Course in Chesterfield and Sinfin Golf Course in Derby, we are delighted to offer another municipal golf course to the market. Based on the market response at Tapton Park and Sinfin, we expect strong interest in Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Centre.

“This is an excellent opportunity for a tenant/buyer to acquire a well-located and long-established golf course with undoubted potential to sell.”
