Srixon is leading the way in developing sustainable golf ball technology with the Z-STAR+e

At last year’s Dunlop Phoenix Tournament Srixon showcased the Z-STAR+e, an eco-friendly (non-commercial) golf ball concept that incorporates biomass-based materials in select components while maintaining the exceptional standards of the existing Z-STAR model. The outer layer of the new SRIXON Z-STAR golf ball contains urethane derived from biopolyol extracted from corn. The materials used reduce carbon dioxide emissions during the production process compared to conventional petroleum-based materials.

Based on the expected global sales volume, we can expect to reduce carbon emissions by about 30.7 tons by using this product (equivalent to 3.1 million plastic bottles (calculated from the 500ml bottle which is the most popular size in Japan).

“Designing a new golf ball – especially the Z-STAR, which is the model played by our professionals – using bio-derived materials is a technical feat and a sign that our team is committed to its role as a market leader, not just from. the idea of ​​performance, but also about sustainability,” added Caron.

Creating Internal Standards for Sustainable Products

Sumitomo Rubber Group has established its own “Internal Standards for Sustainable Products,” which calculates CO2 emissions and biomass content and recycled content of product materials and more.

Caron comments, “We are currently in the process of introducing these standards across the Tire Business, Sports Business and Industrial Products. By increasing the sales of products that meet these internal standards, we hope to contribute to the realization of a circular economy.

“Our Sports business is also involved in efforts to make neutral golf balls and tennis balls a reality. Our Golf business has set goals to increase the sustainable content of all practice golf balls sold to 20% by 2030 and complete the transition to 100% sustainable raw materials in all golf balls sold by 2050. “

Efforts to reduce the use of Plastic

As plastic waste has become a growing social problem in recent years, Sumitomo Rubber Group is now working to reduce its use of plastic.

Today, most of its products use plastic. However, as part of our overall efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, we are currently in the process of gradually reducing the amount of petroleum-based plastic we use for tire labels, packaging and more with the aim of reducing our global use of plastic. by 40% compared to 2019 levels by 2030.

Sustainability Activities in Sports Business—Plastic Reduction Initiatives

Under the Long-Term Sustainability Policy: “Driving Our Future Challenge 2050,” Sports Business is moving forward with a 50% reduction in the amount of plastic used in product packaging and other materials by 2030 compared to the 2019 level.

For golf balls released from Autumn 2021 and later, the window film on the pockets is discontinued and the silver foil will be removed from the 2024 models onwards. The product’s beanie packaging is also now made with FSC. The FSC mix is ​​not 100% recycled, but a mix of recycled wood sources and FSC controlled.
