Golf Business News – Suståne improves disease resistance from the ground up in Ely
A combination of Suståne 5-2-4 and 5-2-10+Fe provides an ideal platform for transitioning to fine grass types at Ely City Golf Club in Cambridgeshire.
Looking to improve disease resistance from the ground up is Course Manager Alan Magee, who explains that the tried and tested system from Suståne is the perfect feed to encourage benthic grass to thrive on parkland club greens.
Ely City is considered one of the best courses in East Anglia, located on the outskirts of Cambridge and offering 18 challenging but beautiful holes of mature parkland. Aided by a team of five players, Magee has been with the team for the last two and a half years.
“With the continuous reduction of chemicals and the drive to do things more sustainably, as custodians of the earth, we have to face the problem of disease control in new ways – for me, that looks at how we can increase our tolerance with better endurance, resilience. , types of grass,” explained Magee.
No stranger to Suståne, Magee has been a long-time user of their 5-2-4 slow-release nitrogen fertilizer at his former club in Dorset. He says: “The 5-2-4 is a building block for all our departments. We use this at eight-week intervals from spring onwards, with liquid feed applied to the ground as needed.”
Suståne’s original formula, 5-2-4 promotes improved disease suppression and faster greening, without excessive growth. Suitable for most turfgrass areas, Suståne 5-2-4 increases the ability of the soil to hold water and nutrients, improves the stress of plant pathogens and strengthens the plant’s tolerance to heat, drought and other environmental stress factors.
“This product is a great start to spring, it gets us going and provides all the nutrients we need to support the bentgrass and strengthen our greens before the busy playing season,” adds Magee. “For extra oomph, we apply 5-2-10+Fe every eight weeks from July onwards as we start preparing the winter areas,”
With its 1:2 N to K ratio, Suståne 5-2-10+Fe helps the plant with water flow and disease suppression, and improves the production of chlorophyll for outstanding turf color without high growth.
Magee concludes: “This combination gives us great consistency and flexibility to adapt to more demanding weather conditions. As we pursue a large number of people bent on our vegetables, I firmly believe that if we get the biology in the soil, our whole system will work. Both the venue and the players will hopefully thank us for it!”
