Fans on social media criticized Devin Haney for his decision to take legal action against Ryan Garcia after he settled with the New York State Athletic Commission for drug testing.
Ryan was banned for one year and must pay a $1 million+ fine for his probation.
Haney Cites Financial and Psychological Impact
In the interview, Haney said his loss to Ryan Garcia on April 20 affected him “financially” and “mentally.” Because of that and a positive review from Ryan, Haney takes legal action.
“My lawyers and team will do what they have to do to prove that in court about Ryan Garcia. We will take legal action because it affected me. Not only financially but mentally and everything,” said Devin Haney on the Title Sports Network about his plans to take further legal action against Ryan Garcia after losing to him last April.
Social Media Backlash
People on social media view Haney as showing weakness and feel that he is hurting himself by continuing to cry about it.
They saw this as Haney showing that he was soft, and pointed out that other fighters did not follow legal procedures when their opponents failed drug tests.
If you’re Haney, you’d be better off letting the New York State Athletic Commission’s actions toward Ryan Garcia be the end of you. They locked him up for a year for what he did.
It is not a good move for Haney to keep talking about this because it shows weakness and gives the impression that he cannot accept defeat.
Last week, Top Rank won the bid for Haney’s WBC light welterweight mandatory Sandor Martin with a minimum bid of $2.42 million.
It’s possible that the Sandor Martin tournament purse bid would have been higher if Haney had beaten Ryan Garcia, which would be true, but it wouldn’t be by much. However, even for a star boxer, a fight with Sandor Martin would not command a big purse bid because it could not sell.
Even if Haney knocked Ryan out, the purse bid for Sandor Martin’s title defense would not have been higher. Would Matchroom or Top Rank want to shell out tons of dough for that fight and hope the fans would agree to watch it on PPV? It is doubtful.
