Harry Kane hopes England’s in-form players can make the difference at Euro 2024

Harry Kane hopes England’s key players can continue their impressive club form at Euro 2024, which starts tonight against Serbia.

The Three Lions open their campaign in Geksenkirchen aiming to do better than at the last European Championship, when they lost to Italy in the final on penalties.

Captain Kane will lead England’s challenge after a fine first season at Bayern Munich from an individual perspective where he topped the Bundesliga goals charts with 36 in just 32 games.

Gareth Southgate could also call up Champions League winner Jude Bellingham, who shone in his first season at Real Madrid, and Phil Foden, whose performances reached new heights as Manchester City retained their Premier League title.

Kane told the BBC’s 5Live’s Daily Podcast: “It’s a great team.

“I think it’s hard to say if it’s the most talented, we’ve had the most talented teams throughout England’s history.

“But I think what I can say about this one is that it’s probably the most in-form team we’ve had if you look at the players and the seasons they’ve had in their teams, I think everyone is ready.

“We’ve all had good seasons so time will tell, you have to change the club form to the international form and that’s what we’ll be looking to do and we’ve had a few weeks to prepare ourselves and we have to go and show that.”

Kane has high hopes

Such is the wealth of England that Kane admitted that it would be a big shame if England did not lift the title in Berlin next month.

“If we don’t win, we will be disappointed,” he added.

“Even if you are unlucky and go out and score penalties, we want to win and start winning as a national team because we have been taking steps towards this moment. It will be difficult, we know that, but we are ready for the challenge.”

Kane, England’s all-time leading goalscorer with 63, will become the first Three Lions captain in four major competitions when he leads the team tonight.

The 30-year-old said: “It’s not easy to play for England, first and foremost – it’s even harder to get into the big tournaments.

“It’s an achievement to be proud of because I think it shows consistency, efficiency, professionalism, and making yourself available in all competitions is not always easy.”
