Harry Kane sets three of England’s all-time goalscoring records against Serbia

England captain Harry Kane has made more appearances in major international competitions than any player in the country’s history.

When Kane was named in the starting XI for England’s narrow Euro 2024 win against Serbia on Sunday night, it included the Bayern Munich striker in 23 games at this level.

His 22nd came in 2022 when he missed a penalty in England’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to France, tying the previous record shared by Ashley Cole and Raheem Sterling. But Kane now stands alone in front of all the other Three Lions players.

It wasn’t a typical performance from Kane against Serbia, he was sadly limited in terms of his touch as he tried to stick to being a ‘number nine’ player rather than taking part in deep build-up play. But, at the end of this European Championship, Kane and all England fans would love him to extend the record to 29 if Gareth Southgate’s side return to the final.

Another goalscoring record fell for Kane on Sunday as he topped England’s European Championship charts once again, moving to 12, one ahead of Gary Neville.

The third record also made him the first captain of England in four different major tournaments, having worn the armband at the World Cup in 2018 and 2022, as well as Euro 2020. David Beckham captained England in three tournaments (2002, 2004, 2006). as did World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore (1966, 1968, 1970) and Bryan Robson (1986, 1988, 1990).

After being selected by the Republic of Ireland, Kane was given his senior England debut by Roy Hodgson in 2015 in a friendly against Lithuania – scoring 80 seconds after coming on.

He made his European Championship debut in the summer of 2016, before being named permanent captain by Southgate ahead of the 2018 World Cup – he had been in charge of the national team since June 2017 aged just 23.

Kane became the first England player to win the World Cup Golden Boot in 32 years in 2018 when he scored six goals to match Gary Lineker’s feat in 1986. In March 2023, he scored his 54th goal for England to overtake Wayne Rooney as the top goalscorer.
