“He doesn’t believe in multi-systems”: Jasprit Bumrah analyzes the captaincy styles of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah shared his insights into the unique captaincy styles of three of India’s most prominent cricket leaders: MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli again Rohit Sharma.
Speaking at an event in Ahmedabad, Bumrah, who has played under all three captains, gave a detailed comparison of their styles and highlighted what makes each of them different.
Bumrah details the captaincy styles of Dhoni, Kohli and Rohit
Bumrahwho played his international debut under Dhoni in 2016, described his former captain as someone who instilled a sense of security in the players. “MS [Dhoni] He gave me great security, immediately. He trusts his instincts a lot, and he doesn’t believe in many schemes,” Bumrah was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
In contrast, Bumrah portrayed Kohli’s captaincy as energetic and passionate. “It’s Virat [Kohli] driven, passionate, wears his heart on his sleeve. He pushed us on merit, and changed the narrative that way,” explained the right hand driver.
Bumrah acknowledged Kohli’s significant influence on the team’s mentality and performance, saying that although Kohli is no longer the captain, he is still an important leader in the team.
“Now Virat is not a captain, but he is still a leader. Captain is a position, but the team is managed by 11 people,” the 30-year-old added.

Bumrah reserved special praise for current Indian captain Rohit Sharma, calling him “bowler captain.” He highlighted Rohit’s sensitivity towards bowlers, saying, “Rohit understands the emotions of the players and knows what the player is going through. He’s not tough and he’s ready to answer.” This approach, according to Bumrah, fosters a supportive environment for bowlers to thrive.
Bumrah’s favorite captain
When asked about his favorite captain among the three, Bumrah jokingly said, “There are good captains, but I will take my name – I am my favorite captain.” These simple words show his confidence and leadership ambitions, as he has led India in several matches, including the Test against them. In England and T20I series against Ireland.
