“He was innocent”: Sandeep Lamichhane’s lawyer declares Nepali cricketer innocent of rape charges

In a surprising turn of events, the former cricket captain of Nepal Sandeep Lamichhane was acquitted of the rape charges on Wednesday, May 15, by the Patan High Court. This overturns his conviction by the Kathmandu District Court in January 2024, which sentenced him to eight years in prison and a heavy fine.
Sandeep Lamichhane was acquitted by the Patan High Court
Lamichhane, a star leg star and national hero, was accused of raping an unnamed woman in 2022. He was initially released on bail while awaiting trial and then appealed his case.
“The judgment of the district court is reversed,” Bimal Parajuli, deputy registrar of the Supreme Court, confirmed to setopati.com. “Sandeep Lamichhane has been released.“
Lamichhane’s lawyer, Sabita Bhadari Baral, echoed this statement, telling Reuters, “It was necessary for him to be released by the high court. He was innocent.”

Lamichhane could be selected in Nepal’s T20 World Cup squad
This dismissal saw Lamichhane return to the cricket field. He was not included in Nepal’s provisional squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, but with the final deadline for induction being May 25, his inclusion remains a possibility.
However, Lamichhane’s return to international cricket may not go smoothly. In February, the Scottish cricket team staged a silent protest refused to shake his hand following their defeat in Nepal. The move highlighted the ongoing controversy surrounding the allegations.
