When it comes to a player’s equipment, the golf ball is often the most overlooked piece of the bag.
Most golfers will spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars to get a custom fitting to make sure each of the 14 clubs is tuned and primed for their swing and game (as it should be), but rarely do they spend the same resources on fitting. or testing the right golf ball.
“I think a lot of people out there use anything that’s free,” said GOLF’s Fully Equipped producer Wadeh Maroun in this week’s episode. “Like they go to a golf tournament or something and they get a dozen free Pro V1s or Pro V1x or Callaway balls or TaylorMade balls, whatever it is. And they will play those until they get something else for free.”
Maroun stressed the importance of golf ball fit over club placement, but also suggested golfers try the Ballnamic online tool, developed by Ping.
Golf manager Kris McCormack suggested that if golfers identify some serious options for what golf balls they might use, start testing on the green before making your way back to the tarmac.
“I always tell people; start from green and work your way back,” he said. “Everything moves slowly, within a few meters of each other.”
McCormack explained that there is not much difference in how far they will travel between golf balls, but the difference in swing and control of the greens can be significant.

“All the independent golf ball tests that come out, it’s always 10, 11 yards between the longest ball and the shortest ball,” he said. “Then it always begs the question, okay, if you’ve got a downswing and a cutoff versus an inside and a high, what’s going to be the longest golf ball for all of those different types of release patterns and impact positions? So the golf ball for me is always something I tell people, start on the green and work your way back.”
