The on-again, off-again partnership is on the wane as Rune and coach Mouratoglou have parted ways once again.
Rune announced the breakup on social media and said she would continue to work with him coach Kenneth Carlsen and plans to continue training at the Mouratoglou Academy.
“I had a good conversation with Patrick, and we have decided to part ways,” Rune said in an Instagram post. “He will always be a great friend, but for now, the thing I will plan well is to continue with Kenneth who will be there in all the games and competitions.
“Nothing has changed in my relationship with the Mouratoglou academy which has always been very helpful to me. I am looking forward to getting healthy and back on track.”
The former number 4 player in the world dropped to number 17 in the rankings and was withdrawn from this week’s Olympic Games due to an injury to his left wrist.
At the start of this season, Rune’s coaching staff was Hall of Famer Boris Becker and Severin Luthi, Roger Federer’s former coach. By February, that group was done.
Although Rune opened the season by reaching the finals in Brisbane and reached the semi-finals or better in his first five tournaments this season, his level of play has not improved.
The 21-year-old Rune has dropped out of the Top 10 while younger competitors are improving. World number one Jannik Sinner opened the season by winning his first medal at the Australian Open while Carlos Alcaraz claimed his first Roland Garros title and backed it up with a successful Wimbledon defence.
At Roland Garros, Rune built a two-set lead over Alexander Zverev but faded in five sets in the round of 16. Rune reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon where he lost to Novak Djokovic.
Now, Rune is focused on recovering from a left wrist injury and getting back on the court.
