How Long Will It Be Before Jeremy Swayman Signs A New Deal?

How long will the Bruins let this contract dispute drag on?

Before Boston Bruins President Cam Neely announced the team had offered Jeremy Swayman a $64 million contract ($8 million over eight years), Fourth-Season Dave Pagnotta joined Gord Stellick and Scott Laughlin on the Sirius XM NHL Network Radio Morning Skate.

He was asked how long the conflict between Jeremy Swayman and the Boston Bruins would last. Is the start of the regular season in North America a deadline? Or were there other things that went into these contract negotiations?

NHL Rumors: New York Rangers Have Salary Cap Issues Next Season

Gord Stellick: “I’m trying to remember when the last player signed, how much in the regular season. We remember William Nylander, who went to the 11th hour many years ago. We wonder if Jeremy Swayman can do that. What’s your idea there in Boston?”

Dave Pagnotta: “Well, you know, going to the weekend, it didn’t feel good. It doesn’t sound like they were, you know, covering any of their gaps or trying to get close. However, it is clear that they are trying, but they cannot get there.”

I think Nylander came in December. Correct me if I’m wrong guys, but I think it was December.”

Stellick: “Yes.”

Who has more power: Jeremy Swayman or the Boston Bruins?

Pagnotta: “Yeah, so I don’t think you know, obviously you have that specific timeline, or, I should say deadline, in terms of playing the whole season. I don’t think that’s the plan. I think we have one week left with the regular season on our side of the pond starting October 8th.

Apparently you guys said that Buffalo and Jersey will be going into Prague on Friday. You’re looking at the start of the regular season, from Boston’s perspective, as a deadline to watch. The line of communication is open. It’s not like someone hanging up the phone saying, You know what? Don’t talk to me for a few days. I don’t want to hear about you.

It is clear that they are trying to fix this, but the financial gap is still a puzzle for them. And at the same time, what’s happening in New York with Igor Shesterkin and the New York Rangers, whenever that plays out, and Swayman isn’t signed, that might factor into those conversations to see where he ends up.

I think everyone understands and knows that Shesterkin will be the highest paid goaltender in NHL history based on the $10.5 million AAV that Carey Price already has. If that number ends up being an eight-year extension, how will that affect Swayman and his deal?

Because he also wants a long-term deal, and that’s what they’re focused on. That will include, one way or another, if they can do something early in the regular season.

The Rangers and Shesterkin, that will contribute to Swayman’s discussions. But going into the weekend, guys, it was still a small thing that we couldn’t do something next week.”
