How many Copa Americas has Uruguay won?
Uruguay’s recent Copa America struggles are not representative of the country’s dominance in the tournament’s history, winning more Copa America titles than anyone else.
Heading into Copa America 2024, Uruguay have their most exciting squad in recent memory. With the presence of Fede Valverde in midfield, the experience of Luis Suárez, and the speed of Darwin Núñez, Uruguay have more creativity and playmaking skills than their last Copa America campaign just three years ago.
Uruguay’s current players will look to emulate the success of their predecessors in the United States this summer. If they succeed, Uruguay will hold the record for most Copa America victories.
For now, however, Uruguay’s tally of Copa America trophies is still tied with the tournament’s current favorites.
Uruguay has won 15 Copa Americas in the tournament’s history, including the tournament’s first two appearances in 1916 and 1917. Argentina also has 15 Copa America titles, tied with Uruguay for the most.

Uruguay has enjoyed the most Copa America success in the decades following the tournament’s inception, winning seven of the first 13 editions of the tournament. However, in the last thirty years, this country has won the Copa America only twice.
At the start of Copa America 2024, it will have been 13 years since Uruguay last lifted the title. Three years ago, Uruguay had a disappointing exit after losing on penalties against Colombia.
Although they are lacking in recent form in this tournament, the history of Uruguay’s Copa America still speaks for itself. In fact, it is the only country that leads Argentina more than twice when it matters most; Uruguay has defeated Argentina ten times in different Copa America finals.
