How much do PGA Tour caddies get paid and what are the facts of bag management?

Ever wanted to play caddy on tour?

For many it is a dream but we all know that there are many mysteries hidden around the shark.

Fortunately, Ben Griffin’s caddy Bryan Kopsick, aka InvestingCaddy on X, is one of the biggest fans on social media and is always happy to pull back the curtains and reveal the real world presence of high-end fund management.

You just wrote this on X:

“How much do PGA Tour cards cost?

Ben’s earnings for 2024 – $1,262,599
Events played – 24

$1,262,599 x .08 = $101,007.92
24 events x $2,000 = $48,000.00

The total tuition fee is $149,007.92

This does not include funding/course income OR travel costs

Ask anything”

To put it simply, those figures show that Kopsick receives 8% of Griffin’s profits in addition to the usual $2,000 payment.

He quickly added: “Forecasting my travel/expert costs will be ~$50,000 per year.”

That brings his annual income to $100,000.

It’s all very interesting and he added:

“The most exciting thing was the KFT visit. Last three years:

2021- $74,890
2022- $23,936
2023- $522,828

That is HIS (Griffin) advantage.”

In other words, the PGA Tour is where the money is.

Q&A session on ‘X’

It was even more fun when Kopsick answered the questions. Here are some of the best.

@MrBradThomas: “Do the highest paid golfers ever care about caddies? Like those who take private jets and stay at home every week?”

Kopsick: “Some tag (on private jets) for free but 99.9% of us fly on our own dime through sales. Once this year we were stuck with a Delta shutdown and I got a free private flight. First time doing that … it was so much fun. “…

@StriderChick: “What’s your worst day?”

Kopsick: “Mondays are the longest days usually associated with going to the next event and going to classes to do some work. Sometimes those Monday evening travel times are the best times but also when I can get the best work done. It all depends on whether it’s like a 4-5 or 10-11 hour trip.”

@sidecarcap: “What, if any, differences do you see in mental game at various levels of professional golf?”

Kopsick: “High-level professionals are able to get into a flow/alpha state and stay there for a long time. which means they can play many holes without thinking “f**k am I really playing well, am I doing well.” I’m seeing a little physical/visual frustration on top players as well. “

@Danley007: “I played in 1993. I got paid $400 a week. 5% win if cut. 8% if top 10. 10% for winning. I did 8 events. I had to stop. 2 cuts made. An additional $200. Couldn’t make it work financially. However, one of the greatest experiences of my life.”

Kopsick: “It’s hard! We missed 7 of my first 9 cuts together and after expenses I think Ben and I both lost money. I lost $ my first 2 years doing it. Thank you so much for waiting and having a support system at home to let me do this crazy thing.”

@PeteAnRepete: “How did you handle that percentage? I haven’t heard of many guys who deviate from 5/7/10.”

Kopsick: “Whatever the player wants to pay for.” Ben is a good boy.”

@nuggetpalooza: “I guess my question is twofold: 1) Are you happy? 2) Do you think this salary is fair?”

Kopsick: “1. F**k yes I am. I have the coolest job in the world 2. Oh yes I do. Without justice. I have zero golf talent and can eat ice cream the night before a round.”

@CrownTown_nft: “How much preparation is each week?”

Kopsick: “I spend about 30 hours before the tournament starts. Prep work can be a walking course, looking at statistics/link data, practicing with a player etc. I only worked for Ben professionally.”

@golfingalldayf1: “Are the costs cheaper at KFT?”

Kopsick: “I spent about $32,000 on KFT last year and that’s a lot of free houses and small events. Yardage books are an additional cost and housing. Flights are more because I treat them when the price is right in a better place.”
